This is very popularly known item to every South Indian people.Usually ,taken during the evening times having with a cup of tea or coffee.It supplies the Folic acid & to incorporate the folate in a delicious way ,for pregnant ladies can take a cup of cooked beans twice a week. I like this & eat this Guggillu prepared by my Grand Mother ( Mother's Mom).She prepares many variety of Peas adding seasoning .She used to suggest my Mother also to cook atleast twice in a week for me & enjoyed it as my evening snack return from the School.Last week ,I got one packet of these Black-Eyed Peas from the Grocery store to try my Grand Mother's recipe .It turned out well and here goes my recipe for all of you & Hope all will like this & try.
Ingredients:
- Black eyed peas/Bobbarlu/Alasandalu- 1cup
- Green chilies-2to 3 chopped
- Onion-1 chopped
- Lemon/Lemon Juice- 1 /1 /2 tbsp
- Cilantro/ Kothimeer leaves/Coriander leaves for garnishing
- Salt-1/2tbsp or adjust to taste
For Seasoning:
- Oil-2tbsp
- Cumin seeds-1/2 tsp
- Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
- Urad dal-1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves-few
- Hing- a pinch (optional)
Preparation:
- Soak black eyed peas/alasandalu for 1 t0 2hrs and then pressure cook for2 cups or more water until the beans are immersed in water.
- Pressure cook for 4 whistles or boil separately by adding salt;untill they are cooked and tender.
- Drain all the water from the Beans (Preserve the water & U can have this stock for making Rasam (soup) with tomatoes,tamarind,adding rasam powder & tadka or above seasoning tastes good)
- Take a pan ,heat it with oil,add the cumin,mustard,urad dal,curry leaves & hing when they starts spluttering add the chopped onions & green chilies.
- Once the onions are cooked and translucent,add the cooked beans and mix well.
- Turn off the flame,add the lemon juice and garnish well with the Fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve it by taking in to a bowl or plate & enjoy when it is steaming hot by finishing it soon !!
Note:
- Adding boiled potato,or chopped tomatoes can be served as a curry.
- Wrap the above tempered black eye peas in a chapathi or wheat tortillas along with fresh cucumbers,tomatoes and peppers and can be taken as a low fat healthy nutritious meal .
